It was only last year that Acura celebrated its 20th birthday. It seems like only yesterday when Acura has brought the world its sporty Integra two-and four-door compact coupe and sedan together with its V6 powered legend four-door midsized sedan. And from then on Acura, Honda’s upscale brand has turned into a major key player in the US automotive market.

Acuras have also emerged as a power on the sports racing department. Motorsports aficionados have been following Acuras in the racing circuits while privateers have been campaigning Integras, RSXs, and NSXs to racing championships for many years now. Despite the fact that Acura has grown into a profitable brand it has preferred to leave factory backed efforts to Honda, the largest engine maker in the world.

Acura has expanded its reach and have started hitting the shores of China last year. And for 2008, Honda will officially introduce the Acura brand in the Japanese market. At present Acuras are sold under the Honda badge in Japan. The main purpose of such move is to market the Acura brand as an international brand and it can also be concluded that this move is born out from the natural desire for competition similar to when Acura decide to join the big-time motorsports competition.

Currently the automaker is officially supporting three LMP2 class cars for this year’s American Le Mans Series (ALMS) campaign and will be supplying the chassis work for two of them. The opening of the ALMS at the 12 Hours of Sebring has proven a fruitful one for Honda with the Acura Andretti Racing team scoring a class win and placing second overall behind Audi’s super powerful LMP1 car. The two other Acura powered teams namely the Fernandez Racing and Highcroft Racing also did well , and has garnered second and fourth in the LMP2 class, respectively.

All of Acura’s ALMS efforts were formulated at the Honda Performance Development (HPD) center in Santa Clarita, California which is approximately 60 miles away from Long Beach. The HPD was founded in 1993 and since then been utilized as an instrument in the development of Honda’s Champ Car and IRL teams. It employs some 120 engineers, technicians, and mechanics.

The HPD facility is also where vital components that the ALMS teams will use such as Acura RSX performance parts are developed. The facility is equipped with five dynos which include a transmission dyno that are utilized for the development of electronic systems such as traction control. Unlike any automotive facility the HPD possess environmentally friendly features like for instance the byproduct of electric dynos is ice which is then used to cool the building and the machineries inside the facility. Catalytic converters are also used on all gasoline powered equipment to keep emissions as low as possible.

Fernandez who is a longtime Honda partner will be lending a hand in helping the HPD massage the gas-powered 3.4 liter V8 that powers all three cars and is presently using a Lola chassis to remove the Acura underpinnings as a variable. The engine revs up somewhere 550 horsepower—this is not the official figure since the team preferred to keep a secret.

Roger Griffiths, HPD Technical Group Leader said, “There are two things I always say I don’t discuss. How much horsepower we have and how much money it cost us.” Despite how hard the team tries to keep it as a secret but its obvious how the Griffiths and company are particularly proud of the engine which is the first to be ever created by HPD.

The Acura LMP2 car is a real screamer and mind you it’s really loud. Fortunately the ALMS governing body makes sure that the engine will not exceed 113 decibels at any given time. The Acura engine runs somewhere between 116-117 decibels which is quite close to what a jet produces at around 120, this particular trait of the Acura engine can help you to distinguish it even when you’re not looking.

The Highcroft Racing which is a new team is concentrating in updating and improving the Acura ARX 01 A chassis which started life as a Courage. However not everything the is Courage was removed or changed, there were also some parts that remained like the tub, crashbox, and the gearbox—all the rest have been re-engineered by the HPD team.

Andretti team which was the most established team among the three will obtain the benefits of the engine as well as the improvements done on the chassis in order to produce the most powerful Acura car ever developed. Highcroft driver David Brabham said, “We’ve got a good car and a good group of drivers, so I think we have a really strong package early in the season.”

At Long Beach the Highcroft team was able to snap a fourth place which was the best Acura result of the weekend. On the other hand the Andretti Racing after taking the top qualifying position has finished sixth and this is attributed to the faulty pit strategy that the team employed. The Fernandez Racing team grab seventh place.

Within months they are both showing massive electrical problems.
Most of the sensors show on the display as being defective and on the VW there is short time of smell of something burning.

The Audi dealer is very difficult… almost hostile when we brought the car in for repairs and possible return.

He insists this is a isolated incident but when I loot in the garage all the lifts and waiting line are filled with new cars.

The North Carolina State Wolfpack finished the 2009 season at 5-7. It was their fourth straight losing campaign and the third in a row under head coach Tom O’Brien. N.C. He helped the Wolfpack finish as the No. 2 ranked passing offense in the league last season while throwing for 3,027 yards and 31 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions. Wilson also showed off his athleticism in the open field, scrambling for 260 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground. He may have to use his legs even more this season as the line must replace three starters. Wilson has outstanding targets in wide receivers Jarvis Williams and Owen Spencer. All-league tight end George Bryan is another sure-handed option. Williams is the team’s top returning receiver.  He made 45 grabs for 547 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. The Wolfpack were among the weakest running teams in the conference a season ago, and that could remain the case with so much new blood on the offensive line. But O’Brien is highly regarded for his ability to develop strong offensive fronts. Hopefully that is that case because the Wolfpack offense would benefit from a little more balance. Curtis Underwood and James Washington look like the two best tailbacks following spring practice.

Defense: After holding its first three opponents to 14 of fewer points, N.C. State allowed its next nine foes to score at least 27 points last season. That’s just not going to cut it if the Wolfpack are going to end their streak of losing seasons. The defense will have a lot or new blood in 2010, but the program is hoping some old blood will help this unit improve. The old blood I’m referring to is linebacker Nate Irving, who missed the 2009 season due to injuries suffered in a car accident. I expect him to return very hungry. He will get plenty of help from fellow linebacker Audie Cole, who is coming off a strong 85-tackle, four-sack campaign. Both of these guys are capable of making plays all over the field, and they will likely have to playing behind a defensive line which lost four starters. N.C. State’s biggest problem a season ago was its pass defense. The defensive backs weren’t good enough to lock up receivers and they were offered very little help in the way of a pass rush. Defensive ends Michael Lemon and David Akinniyi must help provide that pass rush or N.C. State will be very susceptible to air attacks again in 2010.

Prediction: 4th ACC Atlantic – I really like Wilson and the offense, but it may be asking too much for this unit to outscore six opponents to become bowl eligible, which is what it will have to do if the defense doesn’t improve.  I’m optimistic that this could be the year O’Brien breaks through with a winning season, but it won’t be easy.  Check out my 2010 ACC football predictions to see who I have winning the overall league title.

After 11pm at night the Champion Racing Audi R8 has stopped at Arnage. Didier Theys seems to be trying to restart it again but it won’t have it. The lights have gone out on the car and it seems to be very sick. Later on the Audi now has lights on but still won’t start. The team think it has a gear selector problem. After 12am, The Audi is still out in the scenery while the driver tries to get it going again, the gear selection is a problem though they may be able to select gears manually. If so, Theys may be able to get it back round again.

Volvo Cars announced last Thursday that it will roll out top product lines in India by the year-end. Product lines include the Volvo S80 and the XC90.

“The Indian premium segment is very positive and it continues to grow fast. By the end of the year we intend to launch our sedan S80 and SUV XC90,” Volvo Cars India Managing Director Paul de Voijs said. He said the company would import the vehicles directly from Sweden in three engine variants each. Engines include a 2.5 liter turbo diesel, a 3.2 liter and a 4.4 liter petrol unit.

Asked about the pricing, he said that it was too early to comment. “When we import, the vehicles will attract a duty of 112.5 per cent. We will bring only one luxury line and our cars will be in direct competition with Mercedes, BMW and Audi,” Voijs said. He added the company has already appointed three dealers – one each in Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai for its kick-off in India.

The Volvo S80 is a midsize luxury executive car, launched in 1999 as a replacement for the 960/S90 sedan, features a new 3.2 L straight-6 or 4.4 L V8 engine in combination with available four-wheel drive. The second-generation of the car is the first Volvo sedan to offer transversely fitted V8 with a power output of 315 horsepower and 440 nm of torque. With four catalytic converters and advanced electronics, this engine is one of the cleanest V8s available these days.

The all-new S80, based on the EUCD platform, is sharing the platform with its siblings – Ford’s S-MAX and Galaxy large MPVs. Notwithstanding the platform used, majority of the Volvo S80 parts are made by Volvo alone.
